The Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi has reportedly opened discussions with the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) he failed to secure the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This development, according to a source close to the Ajayi is coming on the heels of the adamant posture of the PDP governorship aspirants who have refused to stand down their ambitions for Ajayi to emerge as consensus candidate for the party.
It could not be independently confirmed as at press time, if Agboola is among the various aspirants who have been discussing with the SDP but the party’s National Vice Chairman (Southwest), Olu Agunloye affirmed that some governorship hopefuls had approached the party to run on its platform.
According to the source, all entreaties to the PDP aspirants appear to have been unsuccessful even as the support of the Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde has not helped matters.
“The deputy can win on any platform since the aspirants of the PDP are becoming adamant. What they fail to realize is that it’s only the Deputy Governor who can stand shoulder to shoulder with Aketi and defeat him”.
“It is disappointing that the Oyo state governor will be openly backing Eyitayo Jegede simply because he is from Akure. We have been briefed of all his moves and logistics support for Jegede”.
“But I can assure you that if the PDP fails to play their own part of the bargain before the defection of the deputy governor, SDP shall be there for us and we will win the contest”, he said.
It was gathered that one of the issues mutually agreed upon by the Deputy Governor and the national leadership of the PDP was that the state leaders of the party were to rein in their 3 per ward delegates that have been elected many weeks before the defection of the deputy governor.
However in a statement by his media adviser, Allen Sowore, Ajayi denied knowledge of the campaign posters saying it is the handiwork of desperate politicians in the state.
” This is to inform the general public that the campaign posters with the picture of the Deputy Governor in other political parties rather than the People’s Democratic Party,( PDP) circulating on various New Media Platforms doesn’t emanate from the office of Ondo State Deputy Governor and People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) governorship aspirant Alfred Agboola Ajayi”.
“This is the hardiwork of desperate politicians who have tried unsuccessfully to pitch the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) against the Deputy Governor”.
“The purveyor of this fake news are well known to the public. We would not have responded to this fake and unsubstantiated story if not for unsuspecting members of the public”.
“There was no time the Deputy Governor addressed press after his official declaration for the PDP on Monday 22nd June, 2020”.
“We therefore urge the public to disregard this and the subsequent ones to follow”.
“It is understandable that it will take a very long time for the All Progressives Congress, (APC) to recover from the whammy the defection of the Deputy Governor has caused”.
